Spring Break

April 10, 2017

Spring Break is almost here.  We're in classes through Wednesday and then vacation begins.  We are all so ready.  Today, a mouse scampered through the library and, within seconds, a group of men and boys were chasing after it, shining lights under bookcases, and generally doing whatever they could to avoid work, apparently.  Because Easter is coming quite late this year, we are all on edge.  We are all very ready for a break.

I'm staying home this year for Spring Break.  At least, most of the time.  At the end of next week, I'm off to Hindman, KY to the Troublesome Creek Writer's Retreat at the Hindman Settlement School.  I'm really looking forward to that.  In the meantime, though, I have serious plans for cleaning up my house, visiting the African American History Museum, and going to a variety of appointments.  I know how utterly boring that sounds.  Why not take off to the beach?  Why not hit the road and see family, friends, some new and exciting place?  I'm so happy to stay home this year because I need some time to get things together.  I need some time to complete a few tasks.  I want to travel.  I want to see all kinds of things and places and people.  Before I can do that, though, I've got to do the basics:  mop the kitchen floor and file all my old paperwork and organize the closet that is currently stacked floor to ceiling with bags.

Today, I put a bunch of books on hold at the library.  They're all books about traveling in the US.  I'm making travel plans, to be sure, and I guess I want to remind myself that travel is on the horizon.

So, as you lounge on the beach or enjoy the company of your beloved grandmother or sip a fruity cocktail from the deck of a ship next week, think of me and all the progress I'm making on mopping and dusting and organizing.  I'll be smiling the whole time, I swear.
